Ms. Kenney's Newsletter - January 20

January 23, 2023

Dear Swift Families,

Thank you for a great start to January – it can be a long month, but we are plugging along! We would like to wish those celebrating this weekend a Happy Lunar New Year as they welcome in the Year of the Rabbit!
It’s hard to believe that we are already in the planning phases for next year – please be sure to read this email carefully if you have Kindergarten aged kids next year – or know of any in the neighbourhood, or are an Out of Catchment family.

Kindergarten Registration – ON NOW!

It's hard to believe, but it is time for Kindergarten registration! If you have a child who is turning 5 in 2023 this is the time to sign them up for Kindergarten! They will be our newest Swift Comets in September!
Registration is now open. There are a variety of ways to access all the information and to register, please see our website for information to register.
Please spread the word around the community - the sooner families register, the better. It is very helpful having accurate numbers as we begin planning for next year. We are looking forward to welcoming the next class of Kindergarteners to Swift!

Nature Kindergarten Lottery – January 23rd – 27th

If you are interested in Nature Kindergarten you must register FIRST at your home school (Swift if you’re in catchment or if you’re out of catchment, your home school) and then enter the lottery. These are 2 separate processes.
The link to the Nature Lottery can be found on the School District website.

Out of Catchment & Recent Moves

Those students who live outside of the Swift catchment, have to complete the Out of Catchment process if they wish to stay here next year. This is an annual process. The Out of Catchment forms were sent home this week. No forms will be accepted prior to February 1st. If you have lost your form, or are looking for more information it is available here.
If your address has changed since September, please ensure you update the office.

Cuddle Up and Read – Volunteers Needed!

We would love a few parent volunteers who might be interested in reading with kids. This would not necessarily be with your own child’s class, but rather with some kids who could use some extra reading time with a caring adult. If you are interested in helping out, please email Mrs. Thurmer (gwen.thurmer@abbyschools.ca). We are hoping that we can create a list of helpers to “cuddle up and read”! A cleared Criminal Record Check is required.

It is RAINY/SNOWY (and who knows what else!) season!

We would like to remind all families that we go outside even on the rainy days. Please be sure to dress students for the weather in the morning – boots, raincoats, umbrellas, and maybe even hats and mitts on the cooler days. Please don’t think “but it’s sunny” and decide to send them without – the weather changes far too quickly to take that risk!
Also, please make sure that there are ‘extras’ in their backpack – pants and socks are often victims of puddles and other wet tumbles. We simply do not have enough extras to meet the needs at school. An extra set or 2 in the backpack make for some much happier days!
