Volunteering at School

What you need to know

In 2019, the Ministry of Justice introduced new legislation requiring ANY volunteer who comes near or works around children to complete a criminal record check, regardless of the time spent working near or around them. This new requirement involves a Criminal Record Check (CRC), which will include a Vulnerable Sector Search.  You must have criminal record check clearance in order to volunteer.

This process is to ensure the safety of our students at all times regardless of a position or purpose. If you are planning to volunteer on a field trip, in a classroom, in the library, handing out hot lunch, to read, or to help in any way you will require a criminal record check completed.  These will be valid for 5 years. Volunteer CRC applications are done at no cost.

  1. Email the School District Office at criminal.check@abbyschools.ca to request the online CRC application link. Please include the following in your email:
    1. Full Legal Name
    2. State that you need a VOLUNTEER CRC application.
    3. State "YES - I have a BC Services Card Account" or "NO - I do NOT have a BC Services Card Account"
  2. Complete the ONLINE CRC application.
    1. If you DO have a BC Services Card Account, you can confirm your identity through your account.
    2. If you do NOT have a BC Services Card Account, you MUST report to the School Board Reception with 2 pieces of ID.
  3. Once your CRC is processed, the School Board office will update a district wide CRC Master List.

After you have filled out the CRC online application, fill out the AP 416 - 2 Volunteer Application/ AP 416-4 Letter of Confidentiality Fill in form below. This form MUST be handed in to the Swift Office prior to volunteering every year.
